 Aims of Department

  • Careers / Employability Education is unique in the school curriculum. It is the only subject directly concerned with the full development of young people providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed choices for life-long learning.
  • Our effective careers programme enables young people to acquire the skills, attitudes and abilities they need to chart their course through life with confidence and to be effective in a variety of adult spheres of life.
  • The Careers Department at St Mary’s consists of one full-time member of staff who is responsible for over-seeing all aspects of careers education across the school.
  • Other members of staff have responsibility for Progress Files and UCAS applications while other teachers contribute to the successful delivery of Education for Employability and Citizenship strands throughout the school.
  • Our Department prides itself in effective communication between members of staff and weekly meetings to discuss ongoing changes to the Key Stage three curriculum and the revised curriculum are held.
  • In addition, the expertise of the staff in the department is supplemented by visits from outside agencies including The Careers Advisory Service, Newry Institute Advisors, Sentinus and local entrepreneurs.
  • Students are given advice on the completion of application forms, curriculum vitas, interview technique through role-play and much more.
  • In Year 11, students are introduced to the world of work through a Work Experience Programme. Although students are expected to arrange their own placements in line with their chosen career, they are given help and guidance along the way by our experienced team. At the end of the placement students are encouraged to obtain a written report from the employer for inclusion in their Progress Files. They are also encouraged to reflect upon their experience of work and their performance to be used to inform their own career choice.
