Aims of Department

Whilst implementing the general aims of the school, the Home Economics department have aims relevant to its subject matter.  We wish pupils to develop as fully as possible in all aspects of Home Economics by providing for them a scheme of work which is broad, coherent, relevant and differentiated.

Our schemes are designed in compliance with the National Curriculum for Home Economics effective from September 1996.

  • To provide pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to make informed choices about their lifestyle in preparation for adult life.
  • To foster interest and enjoyment in this subject as well as encouraging good academic qualifications.
  • To develop confidence and a positive attitude towards learning.
  • To enable pupils to become discerning consumers and informed decision makers.
  • To increase awareness of employment opportunities within the field of Home Economics.
  • To help each pupil develop a knowledge and appreciation of diverse and distinctive aspects of cultural heritage and through respect for themselves and others improve relationships between people if differing cultural traditions.
  • To be involved within the community with those in need.
  • To foster an awareness of the
    -Religious
    -Moral
    -Social
    -Cultural
    -Economic
    -Political structures of todays society
  • To promote responsible attitudes towards family life.
  • To develop positive attitudes in pupils so that they can contribute constructively to the family, the community and the wider environment in which they live.
  • To enable pupils to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to provide healthy diets and lifestyles for themselves and others.
  • To create an awareness of the links between diet and health and to understand the contribution of diet to diseases.
  • To establish an awareness of safety levels necessary in the home in order to prevent accidents.
  • To encourage pupils to develop an understanding of how Home Economics shapes and influences the quality of their lives.
  • To enable each pupil to become more proficient in the use of technology and the application of technological skills(including I.T) within Home Economics and to develop an awareness of the wider application of technology in their daily lives particularly in the promotion of health.
