Bin It Roadshow Visits St Mary's

Much fun and learning was had by all on Friday 29th November as the girls participated in the ‘Bin It’ roadshow, the latest event at our school to focus on environmental awareness. The event, organised by the Eco-Committee, involved an interactive drama presentation highlighting the causes and consequences of litter dropping. Pupil, Nicole Cunningham, Year 8 Rep of the Eco group, said she thoroughly enjoyed the event: ‘The Roadshow was excellent; funny and enjoyable but conveying a very serious message. I’m sure it will inspire people to be more conscious about littering in the future and in particular educate people about dropping their chewing gum which has become a very serious issue in our streets and schools today’.

                                                                                 Community Clean Up

On Thursday 26th March, our Year 8 Litter Monitors took part in a community clean up in conjunction with the Newry and Mourne Enterprise Agency. The girls did a marvellous job tidying up around Upper Chapel Street and the surrounding area. Collecting rubbish has never been such fun!

Environmental Youth Speak 2015

On Tuesday February 10th, two students from Year 10, Therese O’Callaghan and Danielle McHugh, represented St Mary’s High School at Environmental Youth Speak 2015. The local heat of the competition was held at the Newry and Mourne District Council offices in Monaghan Row. This year’s topic was ‘Food glorious food, why waste it?’. Our two environmentally conscious students delivered powerful and thought provoking speeches. Well done girls!
