Aims of Department

  • To develop the pupils' interest in and enjoyment of Physical Education.
  • To contribute to the growth and development of the pupils by providing opportunities to acquire and develop motor skills, control, co-ordination and mastery of the body in a range of activities.
  • To develop their ability to make informed judgemants on the quality of their own performance and the performance of others.
  • To develop personal and social qualities through participation in physical activities.
  • To encourage self-expression, individuality and creativity.
  • To develop the ability to work alone, in pairs and within team situations.
  • To develop an awareness of the contribution that Physical Education has on general health.
  • To develop an awareness of the benefits of maintaining a high standard of health and hygiene.
  • To develop an appreciation of the benefits of continuing physical exercise after leaving school.
  • To develop an awareness of the range of leisure facilities in the area.
  • To ensure the safety of all pupils and develop their understanding of the principles of safety in various situations.
  • To encourage and develop skill in a variety of sporting and creative activities.-co-ordination in running, rolling, jumping, climbing, balancing,throwing, catching, serving and striking.-rhythm and timing
  • To provide for the growth and development of each child according to their ability
    -this should include general fitness(strength,stamina,suppleness)and cognitive development
    -activities should be taught in such a manner that allows pupils to develop their individual potentials.
  • To develop an awareness of others, co-operation and self determination.
    -to provide opportunities to work in pairs and groups and to lead,folow or work alongside others.
    -to encourage pupils to give of their best and develop desirable standards of behaviour and conduct(perserverance, fair play, respect, tolerance,safety)
  •  To arouse in pupils the desire to continue active particiaption in physical activity on leaving school
    -to develop knowledge of the effects of exercise on the body and the benefits of taking part in physical activity
    -to develop an understanding of how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and factors which determine personal health and fitness e.g nutrition, smoking, alcohol.
    -to provide knowledge and experience of the recreational opportunities and facilities available in the local community and how to access them
    .
