This area of the webiste will be devoted to showcasing the projects we are involved in this academic year 2010/11. This year we have chosen to focus on energy, waste and litter.

LITTER and WASTE

We are lucky. Here at St Mary's we have never had a really serious problem with litter BUT during our informal environmental audit we discovered areas that were in bad need of improvement. Just look at some of these photos taken in September 2010: clearly something had to be done:

It became clear that not only were teachers and students complacent about litter but also that there was a distinct lack of awareness of what should go into which bin.

Yes that a milk carton FULL of milk!!

In September 2010 we were sending approximately 25 black bin liners of rubbish to landfill.

It will be interesting to see if we can reduce this by at least 20% by June 2011.

HOW?

1. Whole School Assembly to raise awareness

to view the PowerPoint shown to all staff and pupils in October 2010

2. Waste and Litter Monitors

Some of our Year 8 pupils monitor waste and litter within the school grounds. They willingly give up their lunchbreaks once a week to patrol the school grounds picking up litter and acosting anyone they find dropping litter. Well Done to: Rebecca McDonnell, Amy Redmond, Cliodhna McArdle, Megan McKenna (823), Cliona McArdle, Tara McAteer, Cliodhna Traynor, Hannah Stewart (827), Shauna Dillon, Megan Rocks, Niamh Doyle, Sinead O'Hare 824) and Lauren Hogg, Grainne Jennings, Courtney Keenan and Emily Shields (806). KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK GIRLS!!!!

3. Recognition for Teachers and Staff for making efforts to recycle. The following teachers received certificates this term.

Mrs Williams (for making a conscious and deliberate effort to conserve energy in her ICT Suite)

Mrs Magee(for making efforts to conserve energy in her classroom

Mr Magee (for making sure the computers in technology do not waste energy and continually making reference to Eco Schools)

Miss McConnell (for expressing interest in biodiversity - a project for next year Miss Mc Connell, we'll come looking for you!!!)

4. Send out Eco Surveys to both Pupils and Staff

During our Environmental Audit, we felt we needed to get a feel for how students and staff felt about certain issues in relation to litter, waste and recycling. Follow the links below to access copies of the surveys sent out.
