 Snag Group Overview

The World Health Organization outlines that “A health promoting school is one that constantly strengthens its capacity as a healthy setting for living, learning and working.” Indeed, in St. Mary’s SNAG (Student Nutrition Action Group) are the driving force in promoting a healthy lifestyle, self-confidence and pride for staff and students. Our aim is to encourage all staff and students to eat healthy and make healthy lifestyle choices. We are an all-ability, all inclusive group comprising of nine students ranging from Year 8-Year 14. Each member has a purpose and a role to fill. The SNAG are heavily involved within the school organising Fruity Friday, after school Zumba and launching different campaigns including a “Rethink Your Drink” Campaign and also a “No Smoking!” Campaign.

SNAG has worked closely with various businesses and certified health coaches. In October 2015, SNAG had a visit from Lisa McManus, former owner of The Wellness Café. Lisa helped SNAG to find out that what constitutes a healthy lifestyle is not just eating well and exercise rather it is one who eats a balanced healthy diet, thinks positively, feels relaxed, exercises regularly, has good relationships, and benefits from a good life balance. Lisa also gave us healthy break options which are easy to make and inexpensive. We have also worked with Jenny McParland, Owner of Hot Yoga, Newry in promoting healthy breaks. SNAG would like to thank all those businesses who have kindly supported our health ventures this year by donating prizes, this includes : Hennings Electrical, Leann Fegan Beauty, Tan City, Elysium Wellness Centre and Grounded Espresso Café.
