Aims of Department
OUR SPECIFIC AIMS ARE: - - To stimulate pupils' curiosity, imagination and creativity and to develop the ability to operate effectively in society.
- To develop through active learning, each pupils' awareness of Technology and Design.
- To develop pupils' abilities to identify and respond to needs and opportunities 'Technology Push' and 'Market Pull'.
- To involve pupils in purposeful design activities resulting in the development of useful products.
- To promote the ability in pupils to communicate information and ideas through a variety of media.
- To equip pupils with Technology and Design skills to enable them to cope with and respond more effectively to an increasingly technological society.
- To develop pupils' awareness of the nature and application of technological products.
- To develop an appreciation for the importance of quality.
- To promote an awareness of the means by which a society can generate wealth.
- To enable pupils to appreciate the importance of Technology and Design in society, historically and in the present day, particularly as it affects the economy.
- To raise pupils awareness of the implications of Technology and Design decisions on society and the environment.
- To engage the interests of all pupils and help sustain their motivation for learning.
- To promote awareness of Health and Safety issues relating to Technology and Design.
- To develop a sense of self-respect, self-esteem and self-discipline.
- To prepare pupils to live as responsible adults by being responsible for themselves and others.
- To acquire knowledge, skills and practical abilities along with the motivation to use them.
DEPARTMENT OBJECTIVES: - Pupils should be able to: -
- Describe and apply the facts and concepts related to the design of an artefact or
system. - Demonstrate a range of communication skills.
- Identify problems that can be solved through the technological process.
- Analyse problems that they have identified, or which have been posed by others and produce appropriate specifications.
- Identify the resources needed to solve technological problems.
- Identify design constraints imposed by the availability of knowledge, resources and other external factors.
- Collect and compile information, having identified the possible resources, and assess its relevance to the solving of a problem.
- Interpret and produce diagrams, charts, graphs and tables regarding data collection
- Generate and record ideas as potential solutions and evaluate those solutions against predetermined criteria.
- Select and develop a solution to a technological problem taking into account the effects of time, cost, skill and availability of resources.
- Plan and implement the construction of the selected solution to a sufficiently high standard.
- Identify, suggest and carry - out modifications to a product or system both during implementation of the solution and after completion and evaluation.
- Compare and contrast the performance of a complete or semi-complete artefact or system against its original criteria, having carried out evaluation on a continuous basis through the development stages.
- Satisfy the mandatory and other necessary safety requirements throughout all stages of a project.
- Describe some major technological developments and comment on any link between modern technology, the environment the economy and society as a whole.
