Aims of Department
- To develop the pupils understanding of basic geographical principles on which to base further geographical studies.
- To develop a core of knowledge which will help the pupils to understand certain patterns and processes within the environment.
- To develop an awareness of the characteristics and distribution of a variety of different physical and human environments.
- To promote an understanding of the effects of the ways in which people interact with each other and with their environments and the importance of sustainable development in these interactions.
- To develop in the pupils an appreciation of peoples beliefs, values and attitudes to enable them to understand and respect the cultures and ways of life of people throughout the world.
- To develop the pupils understanding of the world, to enable them to make sense of their changing world and apply their learning to new situations.
- To develop an understanding of global citizenship and the ways in which places and environments are interdependent.
- To give pupils opportunities to acquire and apply the skills and techniques including those of map work, fieldwork and I.C.T - needed to conduct geographical study and enquiry.
- To develop a range of geographical skills which enable the pupils to communicate spatial information by drawing and reading maps, interpret features shown on photographs and remotely sensed images and to construct and interpret graphs and tables.
- To develop in the pupils a range of other skills including personal, thinking, learning and communication skills.
- To help pupils become responsible members of the community by developing an appreciation, respect and responsible attitude to their environment.
- To develop an interest in the study of geography beyond the classroom situation.
