Subject Overview

Pupils study the French Language from Year 8 until GCSE. During study, pupils learn Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening skills through a wide variety of activities and resources.  Pupils have the opportunity to practise their skills with their peers, our French Language assistant and interactive activities with French Speaking partner schools.

Why Study the Subject

​

Languages are really important in today’s world and develop great skills for the rest of your life. As well as the language, you also learn about culture and lifestyle of foreign countries, such as food, school life, travel, sports, customs and traditions, famous people, and the list goes on. More than 300 million people speak French on the five continents and French is also the only language, alongside English, that is taught in every country in the world. It is the second most useful language in the world for Business and is both a working language and official language of the United Nations, the European Union, UNESCO, NATO, the International Olympic Committee, the International Red Cross and international courts. French is the language of the three cities where the EU institutions are headquartered: Strasbourg, Brussels and Luxembourg.  French is a good base for learning other languages such as Spanish, Italian, Portuguese as well as English, since a significant percentage of English vocabulary is derived from French. Finally, learning French is the pleasure of learning a beautiful language which is also an analytical language that structures thought and develops critical thinking. There are plenty of good reasons to study French! GCSE is the beginning of that adventure.

Assessment structure

​

CCEA GCSE is exam-based.

There are four exams:

  • Writing

  • Speaking

  • Reading

  • Listening

​

Each exam is worth 25% of the GCSE.
